Al Jay's Story
Life
Al Jay Mason was born in Chicago, Illinois with Greensboro, North Carolina being his first experience away from his homeland in the Midwestern states. He is the owner of A.J. Mason & Associates, a financial management and consulting company out of Fredericksburg, Virginia. He is licensed and contracted to market and provide services on financial products such as college plans, mutual funds, IRA's or Individual Retirement Accounts, annuities, debt elimination, life insurance, long term care insurance, job rollovers, mortgages and other investment and retirement programs for individuals, families and businesses.
Al attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C. before transferring and graduating from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from the School of Agriculture, and as a distinguished military graduate from the university's ROTC program.
Some of Al's North Carolina A&T State University partners in crime for the two years he was there (1967 - 1969) were Ed Cole, Kenneth Thomas, Diane D. Dean, Helena White, Stephanie Williams, Marcia Britton, Marnique Foster, Esther Barbee, Eva McKoy, Mary King, Omeba Davis, Lucirene Turner,Charlotte Pazant, Cora McNeal, Willie Mae Smalls, Catherine Salmon, Iona M. Redd, Charlie B. Flint, Florence Elaine Farrior, Bobby Edwards, Kenneth Bostic, Vivian England, Vivian Logan, Laetitia McClenton, Karen Scruggs, Marilyn Frazier, Moses H. Ramsey, Thomas Suitt and a host of others whose names and faces have escaped memory, or embedded so DEEP it will take a chisel and dynamite to get out!!!
Al has a Master of Art's degree in Human Resource Development from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri, and is a graduate of the military's Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

airie View, Texas; a graduate degree in Special Education from Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia; an active member of the Fredericksburg Area Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and a teacher at Courtland High School in Spotsylvania County. Together they are the parents of two boys, Al Jay, Jr. or Jay (Ferrum College) and Ashanti Sherrod (Christopher Newport University), and one daughter, Adriane Alysia (James Madison University).
Al has been actively involved in several different organizations within the Spotsylvania County School Division. These include the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) at Courtland High School; the Spotsylvania County PTA/PTSA Council; the Fredericksburg District of PTA/PTSA's; the Virginia PTA/PTSA State Legislative Committee; the tutorial program and the Male Choir at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, and substitute teaches in the school systems at Caroline and Stafford Counties.
Al completed 20 years in the military and retired as a lieutenant colonel (LTC) with a primary military occupational specialty of Airborne Ranger Infantry and a secondary military occupational specialty of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Officer.
Al's first military assignment after basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia was at Ft. Hood, Texas as a second lieutenant and platoon leader of the Scout Platoon in the 1/66th Armor Battalion before getting his first Infantry Rifle Platoon with the 1/50th Infantry. His final assignment after returning from Europe as a lieutenant colonel responsible for the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense program for the Air Defense units in Central Europe with additional duty as one of several Evaluators for Infantry Combat Forces in NATO's Central European Region Tactical Evaluation Program was at Ft Meade, Maryland with duty station at Ft. Lee, Virginia as the Infantry Team Leader of the Readiness Group responsible for the combat readiness of Virginia's Reserve and National Guard units.
